The Talbot Village Band
This short Exhibit is about The Talbot Village Band. However, very little information on the band has so far been found. What we can find are several references to a band being associated with Talbot Village, such as the “Talbot Village Pipe and Drum Band”, the “Talbot Village Temperance Band”, the “Talbot Village Brass Band”, as well as the “Talbot Village Band”. There is an assumption here that these are all referring to the same band. It appears that the band was also associated with St. Marks, the primary school in the village when the curriculum was expanded beyond the ‘3Rs’ to include gardening, carpentry, cooking, needlework, as well as forming the Band.

As reported in several newspapers of the time (listed below), the Band made various appearances in the area, often with other bands between 1882 to 1934. They frequently performed at local civic and charitable events, such as church concerts, processions, fêtes, etc. The Victorian period was possibly a period when such bands were more prolific in society and in local communities, especially as many modern distractions that we see today had not yet been invented.
Research is ongoing to see if more information on the band can be found.
As can be seen in the following image, the notion of 'temperance' was common during Victorian times as it reflected a sort of moral upstanding in society. Certainly this chimes with Georgina Talbot's insistance that there should be no alcohol being sold in the village via a shop or public house.
