Hedley Walter Carter

In 1922, Hedley Walter Carter was born in Epsom, Surrey, the son of Hedley Vicars Carter and his wife Edith Lily. His birth was registered in the June quarter. His mother’s maiden name was Girling.

He became a Sergeant (number 926380) in the RAF Volunteer Reserve.

 On the 3^rd of November 1942, his ‘plane took off at 19.59 from Driffield for a night bombing exercise but at a height estimated by witnesses, to be between 150 and 200 feet, it dived down to the ground, killing all three crew, including Hedley Carter. It wasn’t possible to identify the cause of the crash, but it was believed that flash bombs exploded either in the starboard engine, or in the wing itself. Carter was a Sargent in the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserve, and the plane’s observer.

0n the 7th of November 1942, he was buried at St Marks. He was aged 20 and had been living at 9 Pine Parade, Wallisdown, Bournemouth.
